Peppermint, Mentha × piperita, is the perennial hybrid of watermint and spearmint, M. aquatica and M. spicata. Mentha piperita has purple flowers.
Botanical characteristics
It spreads by rhizomes and rarely sets seed. Named peppermint stocks are commonly maintained by cuttings or division, so seed-raised material should not be equated with a vegetatively maintained clone.
Hybrid identity and seed reference
Peppermint is the listed seed reference for reseller enquiries; no named clonal selection is specified.
