Aubergine Black Beauty – Solanum melongena

Solanum melongena is a cold-sensitive member of the Solanaceae, usually treated as an annual. Its violet, star-shaped flowers develop into fleshy berries. Cultivated aubergines vary in fruit shape and skin colour, including pale as well as purple forms. Warmth supports growth; the familiar dark oval fruit is only one part of the range.
