Luffa cylindrica is a synonym of Luffa aegyptiaca, an annual climbing member of Cucurbitaceae.
Botanical names and group identity
Tendrils support the stems, while the elongated fruits develop a fibrous internal network as they mature. That change explains the vegetable sponge name. A long warm season and climbing support distinguish its requirements from compact vegetable species.
