Amaranthus cruentus is an upright, frost-sensitive annual. Its oval leaves and clusters of tiny flowers in erect or arching spikes give the ornamental selections a different silhouette from many daisy-flowered annuals.
Botanical characteristics
A sunny, sheltered position suits the species. The catalogue here groups named flower seed references under this botanical name.
Flower spikes and foliage in named selections
Oeschberg combines dark foliage with crimson flower spikes. Autumn’s Touch has bronze and green flower plumes, while Red Spike has dark red, arching, airy heads. These differences in colour and inflorescence form give seed retailers useful comparisons within an ornamental bulk assortment. The similarly named Hot Biscuits and Hot Bisquits entries remain separate article references.
