Lobularia maritima, also traded as Alyssum maritimum, forms low spreading mounds with clusters of small, scented flowers.

Botanical characteristics

White is familiar, but garden selections extend into pink and purple shades. Flowering can decline in hot summers, so a long flowering period should not be treated as independent of climate. Good drainage is important.

A low-growing, scented flower assortment

Seed retailers can compare compacta Tiny Tim, Royal Carpet and Paletta mixed. These entries give an assortment named varieties alongside a mixture. The low, spreading habit makes sweet alyssum a distinct seed subject for edging and container-flower ranges.
