Winter purslane – Claytonia perfoliata

Claytonia perfoliata is an annual with stalked basal leaves and a distinctive upper leaf pair around the flowering stem. The upper blades may join into a disc or remain notched or cleft, with small white or pink flowers above them. This leaf arrangement explains the perfoliata name. Winter purslane is a common name; the plant belongs to Montiaceae rather than Portulaca.
