Daucus carota belongs to the Apiaceae; cultivated carrots are generally placed in subsp. sativus.
Flowers and foliage
The species is biennial, with finely divided foliage and white flower umbels normally appearing in its second year. Cultivated forms have fleshy taproots whose shape and colour vary between cultivars.
Cultivated carrot forms and seed selection
The listed Chantenay, Autumn King and Mixed colours are distinct seed references for an assortment, rather than alternative names for a single uniform carrot. Root form and single-variety versus mixed-colour presentation are useful comparison points for resellers. Loose, well-drained soil matters to root shape because compaction can cause branching or distortion.
