Arctium lappa is a biennial with a first-year leaf rosette and a deep taproot, followed by taller flowering stems. Arctium lappa has heart-shaped leaves.
Botanical characteristics
Hooked bracts surround the purple flower heads and form burs that can attach to animals. The hooks belong to the enclosing bracts; the fruits develop inside. This explains a dispersal mechanism different from the wind-borne pappus of many other Asteraceae.
Biennial rosette and hooked burs
Great Burdock is the actual seed reference in this botanical group.
