Genovese, fine-leaved and lettuce-leaf basil

Sweet basil Genovese has large, glossy green leaves with a slightly wavy surface. Basil lettuce leaved has very large, somewhat crinkled leaves.

Minette has small leaves and a tight, compact mound-shaped habit. Leaf size and plant habit give resellers two useful distinctions between fine-leaved basil and the larger Genovese and lettuce-leaf types.

Purple basil seeds and foliage colour

Sweet Basil Dark Opal has purple, crinkled leaves. Red Rubin Improved has purple-bronze foliage.

Thai, lemon and cinnamon basil varieties

Siam Queen is a Thai basil with an aniseed flavour, green leaves and purple stems and flowers. Lemonette has pointed green leaves with a slightly serrated edge and a lemon flavour. Cinnamon has a cinnamon fragrance and purple flowers and stems.

Holy basil and botanical groups

Genovese, Thai and the named purple-leaved selections above belong to Ocimum basilicum. Lemonette is listed under Ocimum americanum. Holy basil, also called tulsi, has a separate Ocimum sanctum group; Ocimum tenuiflorum is another botanical name for it.

Holy Red has red-tinged foliage, while Holy Green has green leaves.
