violet – Hesperis matronalis

Hesperis matronalis is a biennial or short-lived perennial in Brassicaceae. A leafy rosette precedes the upright flowering stems, so its life cycle differs from a quick annual. The four-petalled flowers are fragrant, especially towards evening. Plants can spread by self-seeding, a useful distinction when describing this traditional flower species.
